Ajmer

Ajmer is known as a famous and major muslim pilgrimage centre in the state of Rajasthan. Ajmer was founded by local Rajput ruler, Ajayadeva in 11 th century. Once in 1193 it was shortly annexed by Delhi Sultanate but returned to the local rulers, upon payment of tribute. Ajmer is famously known for the tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti who came here from Persia at the end of the 12th century. Every year a Urs is held at this place which is celebrated by million of people of all ages and religions. Ajmer was an important military center during the medieval period. Famous mughal emperor Akbar built a fort here. There are several famous tourist attractions in Ajmer and around Ajmer known as Shahajahan's Mosque, Mayo College, Nasiyan Temple, Circuit House, Museum and many more.

Famous Attractions in Ajmer


Urs Ajmer Sharif: Every year, Ajmer celebrates a huge Urs in the tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti which is joined by millions of people of all religions. This is the biggest Urs of India celebrated here in Ajmer. This Urs is celebrated in respect of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.

Shahjahan's Mosque: Shahajahan's Mosque is located in the corner of the inner court of the Dargah. This mosque is very beautiful and built by white marble with a long and narrow court. This court has low arcade and delicate carvings with trelliswork on it.

Mayo College: Mayo College is one of the India's best public schools. This college is located in the southeast of the city and was founded only for princes in 1875 AD. It is a school that was designed to make British gentlemen out of Indian princes. Mayo College in Ajmer has still its quality to attract the people of India.

Nasiyan Temple: Nasiyan Temple is built by red stone and situated in the centre of the town of Ajmer. This temple is a Jain Temple and was built in 1865. This temple is also known by the name of Golden Temple. There is a main double storied hall which is beautifully designed with gold and silver decorations. Temple also displays splendid wooden gilt representations, glass engravings and paintings which describe the Jain faith about the creation of the world.

The Circuit House: Circuit house overlooking the artificial lake, Ana Sagar in Ajmer was the former British Residency. From here, one can enjoy watching the lake and the cenotaph and the shrine of the Hindu reformer Swami Dayananad, founder of the Arya Samaj.

The Museum: Ajmer has a beautiful museum which was once the royal residence of Emperor Akbar in the year 1570. This museum has a rich repository of the Mughal and Rajput armor and exquisite sculptures. There is also a limited collection of old weapons, miniature paintings, ancient rock inscriptions and stone sculptures that date back to the 8th century AD.

By Air: The nearest airport to Ajmer is in the city of Jaipur which is only 138 km away from the city.

By Rail: Ajmer is well connected through railway network with all the famous and major cities of India like Delhi, Agra, Ahmedabad, Barmer, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mount Abu and to Mumbai Via Ahmedabad.

By Road: Ajmer is well connected to the major cities of the state and the country by road transport system.
